I got it working this time and it works like a charm!
Im doing the updates now. Thanks alot for the write up. Im looking forward to using my XO without sugar.

I guess I will try again to get ubuntu on it.

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

I tried the ubuntu install with a 8GB sdhc card. Something went wrong because while it was doing "tar -C /media/OLPCRoot -xvjf /path/to/OLPCFiles-hardy-20080506.tar.bz2" the terminal quit for no apparent reason. It did something to my card because now when I boot up the machine with the card in it, it says "Can't open disk label package" it says it twice and then boots into sugar. Now it doesn't seem to recognize or mount my sd card.

I guess I messed up my card, is there any way to salvage it and try again?

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Oh yeah - one question. What is the root password?

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Thank you for the clear and accurate instructions. I only encountered the same problem Satya described:
"SDHCI: card didn't power up after 1 second"

I hold down the "x" button on the game pad while booting and then I was able to boot Ubuntu, It might be because I am using a 4gig SD card but I am not sure.

Thanks again Thomas!

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

I just did this last night. I used the instructions here and Teapot's Intrepid file (from the OLPC news forums).

I used a PNY card I picked up at Best Buy with no problems. 4GB I think it is.

I haven't had a chance to extensively test it out, but so far things seem fine.

Thanks for having such clear instructions. It makes it a lot less intimidating for folks like myself that are new to Linux to have the handholding like this.

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Ok my original qu didn't go through. I was also getting the 1 second power issue.

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

I found the answer for my own question. I upgraded to Sugar 8.2, which updates the firmware as well. I am now running Ubuntu off a 4G PNY SDHD card/

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Cool, thanks for the update! That thread is attributed already at the end of the first paragraph, but it's pointing to post #15 rather than #18. I am indebted to your hard work! Thanks!

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

That's all great, however I am surprised with complete lack of reference to http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/... -- the original post on OLPCNews forum where I have posted it.

I don't care much about attribution, however the rest of the thread contains many relevant details and updates including faster Youtube support, power management with later versions of the kernel, troubleshooting, etc.

There is an update to this for Intrepid Ibex:
http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/...

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Hi Thomas,
Thanks a lot.
The instructions worked beautifully.
The differences I noted.
I have to press down "x" button while powering on XO. Otherwise it states
"SDHCI: card didn't power up after 1 second" and waits at firmware ok prompt.
To boot into Sugar like wise I have to press down "o" button while powering XO on.
Cheers,
Satya

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Followed your instructions and got Ubuntu Hardy running on my XO-1 without a hitch after spending hours in the OLPCNews forums.

You're welcome! I'll have to see about updating this guide for Ubuntu 8.10 soon. I sacrified the SD card I was using for Ubuntu to my wife last week, so I'm temporarily back on Sugar. I miss Opera already!

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Brilliant! My 9 year-old daughter absolutely loves the XO now that she can access flash-driven pages through Ubuntu. She told me to write a thank-you for her. The instructions worked without a hitch, loaded Xfce on a 2G SanDisk SD card and improved the response time of the XO exponentially. Thanks!

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Figured it out. It's the ".xfce4_startup" file in the OLPC user's home folder. It's got mouse settings hardcoded so they override the ones you specify in the settings app.

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Just came across one question: I noticed that certain settings won't persist across reboot, like mouse sensitivity and such. How do I get them to persist?

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

These instructions were AWESOME. Worked like a charm. One note: After doing all of the updates, the file to modify for enabling automatic login is "/etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom" and an easy non-text-editor way to set it up is to run "sudo gdmsetup" and enable the automatic login through the GUI configuration tool.

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

Hey, will you make any modifications necessary for Intrepid Ibex?
Justin

Re: Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the OLPC XO-1

wow! this is amazing! even the dim light buttons keyboard shortcuts works great! now I need to get Flash Player to work.
