Even disconnected, they will lose charge over time. When laying up a vehicle that you may want to start at a moments notice (new cache!) it's best to apply a continuous 'float charge'. That is a regulated voltage of say 13.5 - 13.8 volts (temperature dependent if you are anal). Note that most discount store battery chargers will murder your batteries if left on constantly! Good voltage regulation is the key here. Especially if its been sitting for months.
